myofascial decompression therapy
(cupping therapy)
Cupping therapy, also referred to as myofascial decompression, is an ancient modality used in various styles of bodywork. At Body & Soul, we offer cupping therapy as a stand-alone session, or as an additional tool within a massage session. Cupping utilizes negative pressure to lift the tissue, whereas mostly downward pressure is used during a typical massage. Cupping therapy provides several benefits, including but not limited to:
Increased blood flow via vasodilation
Increased range of motion
Decreased muscle tension
Pain relieving effects
Reduced inflammation
Creates efficiency by allowing your massage therapist to work different areas at the same time
Myofascial Decompression is a versatile modality used for a wide variety of treatments. We use a few different kinds of techniques during a cupping session to accommodate our clients which could include:
Static cupping – cups are placed over a specified area, and sit with no movement
External gliding – your therapist glides 1-2 cups over a specified area
Internal gliding – cups are placed in specific areas, then movement is also incorporated; either actively or passively
Flash cupping – 1 cup is quickly applied then removed repeatedly to a specified area
The cups themselves will be comprised of either plastic, silicone, or glass. Cupping therapy can leave marks on the treated area that could remain for up to 2 weeks after treatment but is typically considered a low-risk treatment approach with a plethora of potential benefits. Cupping is contraindicated for anyone with a history of stroke or blood clot, leukemia, hemophilia, frail or broken skin, injection sites, hernia and past hernia sites, and prenatal clients.
